Glaucoma

Case Report:

A 76 year-old male with severe, progressive glaucoma was told by his ophthalmologist that he would have complete vision loss within 1 year. He could see light-only in his left eye and less than 20/200 in his right eye. He traveled to a clinic in Germany where he received 1 week of intravenous EnercelÒ and then had collection of autologous stem cells from a bone marrow aspirate. The counts were reported by his treating team to be exceptionally high-- 2.7 million stem cells with a viability of > 89%, attributed to the Enercel infusions. He then received 2 cc retrobulbar injections of stem cells behind both eyes and 1 cc intravenously as well.

Within 3 months, he reported better vision. Depth perception significantly improved. In 6 months, he could see shapes out of his left eye and vision from the right eye was much better. Visual field testing from his right eye before and after treatment are below [representing about 50-70% improvement]:

A.  Before [left] versus After [right]:

Field of vision [white area] is 50-70% improved

B. Before [left] versus After [right]:

Visual field deficit [black and gray areas] is 50-70% less
